    Dear Member,

The International Diabetes Federation would like to introduce to you its new Life for a Child humanitarian programme.

As you know, following a decision made by the Board, operational changes were made to the Life for a Child programme which was brought back under the direct control of IDF. A new Steering Committee was formed and a new Humanitarian Project Coordinator was appointed in Brussels to support the programme.

In areas where healthcare service provision cannot deliver efficient diabetes treatment and where access to medical resources such as insulin, test strips or haemoglobin A1c tests is limited, children and youth with type 1 diabetes develop serious complications which lead to premature death. Therefore, we aim to provide sustainable access to essential diabetes medication, education and care to 1000 children and young adults with type 1 diabetes living in Low Income Countries and Lower-Middle Income Countries by end of December 2021.

Over the next two years, IDF Life for a Child plans to:
    - Identify areas of unmet needs where healthcare infrastructure is sufficient to deliver care with the support of IDF.
    - Establish a stable and sustainable structure for efficient delivery of the programme.
    - Deliver insulin and blood glucose monitoring to sites in targeted countries.
    - Strengthen the ability of existing diabetes services to deliver adequate healthcare to young people with type 1 diabetes.
    - Generate evidence and build the capacity to encourage changes in governmental policy.

As we are now entering the pre-planning phase of the programme, we need your help to identify which countries and suitable local centres/hospitals could be targeted in priority by IDF. The initial phase would target 2-3 countries and the list of sites and countries supported would steadily grow as the programme expands.

We are therefore asking you to suggest local centres or hospitals in Low Income and Lower-Middle Income Countries and motivate why you think they should benefit from the programme. Please send back your form filled to Emmanuel.rivera@idf.org by the 16th of September 2019. The LFAC Steering Committee will review your proposals and decide which countries to target.

Should you wish to discuss Life for a Child in more detail or explore specific ways in which you may be interested in contributing to the project, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Sincerely yours,

    Professor Linong Ji
    Chair, LFAC Steering Committee
