  Topiramate delivered positive results for preventing migraine headache

  A study on the antiepileptic drug topiramate delivered positive results for preventing migraine headache. An article released in the February 25 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association reported on a 26-week study conducted during outpatient treatment at 52 clinical centers in North America on 486 patients who had a six-month history of migraine with three to twelve migraines a month. The research showed that a statistically significant reduction in migraine frequency occurred when researchers administered doses of 50, 100, or 200 milligrams per day (mg/d) of topiramate. A control group took a placebo. The researchers measured the monthly migraine frequency as well as reductions in migraine days, severity, duration, and days a month requiring rescue medication. The effect of the medicine continued for the duration of the double-blind phase of the study.
