The Congress is co-sponsored by the World Psychiatric Association. The main topic of the congress is “Crises and
Disasters: Psychosocial consequences”. The WPA sections can play a crucial role in this congress. There is no section that is not directly or indirectly linked with the main topic of the congress. Besides, as you will see in the First
Announcement any other topic within the area of mental health would be most welcome.  

You may remember that during my tenure as Secretary for Sections of the WPA I had the opportunity to initiate the production of a series of books entitled “Advances in Psychiatry” based on update contributions by the sections. I want to do something similar on the occasion of the congress, this time under the auspices of the World Federation for Mental
Health. I am considering the production of a book on the psychosocial effects of Crises and Disasters based on the contributions to the congress. I am sure that contributions of the WPA sections will be of major importance in this context. 

The congress will provide the opportunity for acquaintance with the ancient Greek heritage. The congress hotel is
situated strategically in the middle of ancient Greek monuments like the columns of the Olympian Zeus, the Acropolis of Athens and the new magnificent Acropolis museum (a free ticket to visit this museum will be included in your bags). At the Opening we have scheduled a performance of the well-known choir “Opus Femina” from the city of Corinth that has received many international awards. I am sure that you will find the congress rewarding scientifically and pleasant socially. We will see to it that you will have a good time in Athens.
