Thyroid diseases are frequent conditions with possibly crushing health outcomes that influence all populations around the world and thyroid function tests (TFT) are frequently ordered for their diagnosis and monitoring. TFT, including thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH, or thyrotropin), thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3) tests, are used in the initial evaluation and monitoring of thyroid disease. The value of TFT is also recognized for thyroid cancer management with the examples of thyroglobulin and calcitonin. Assay performances and appropriate test ordering are important points of focus to ensure best use of TFT.
