Proper medical assessment and care is vitally dependent on both the availability of accurate laboratory tests as well as on reliable reference intervals (RIs) to help guide test interpretation. Population RIs are important instruments for test utilization. However, they do not consider the fact that most analytes are individual, i.e. they are much less variable within an individual, than within a group of individuals. This makes individual (personalized) RIs an attractive concept for laboratory medicine. Using the example of hemogram parameters, the conceptual and practical issues of individual RIs will be discussed.
