Dear Colleagues,
The next IFCC webinar: "Challenges in laboratory diagnosis of endocrine diseases" September 21, 2022.
The webinar would present some challenges in laboratory diagnosis of endocrine diseases, particularly for polycystic ovary syndrome, autoimmune thyroid diseases, and thyroid-associated orbitopathy, as well as interferences in immunoassays.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age and is characterized by reproductive and hyperandrogenic features. In addition to endocrine disturbance, this metabolic disorder has central features are obesity, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, increased oxidative stress, chronic inflammation and subclinical atherosclerosis with a real risk of future cardiovascular disease. Consistent with these facts, finding new biomarkers with high specificity and sensitivity for diagnosis of PCOS is currently an active area of research.
This webinar additionally would address the methodological issues in the field of autoimmune thyroid diseases and thyroid-associated orbitopathy, and point out the actual challenges in the laboratory assessment and diagnostics. The main focus of the lecture would be on thyrotropin receptor antibodies, the specific biomarkers which define the clinical course of both thyroid and orbital autoimmunity. Apart from being a valuable research tool, thyrotropin receptor antibodies demonstrate a significant clinical potential as highly sensitive and specific biomarkers. Routinely, hormones are determined by immunoassays. Immunoassays are sensitive methods and are based on specific antibody-antigen reaction. However, immunoassays are subject to various interferences and most common would be elaborated in this webinar.
This webinar comprises of three following presentations of 20 min each followed by 20 min of panel discussion at the end.
Chair: Dr. Snežana Jovicic
Talk 1: "New biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment of PCOS" - Dr. Iva Perovic Blagojevic
